Woman arrested after death of 7-week-old daughter

ARCATA – A Polish national has been arrested in connection with the death of her 7-week-old daughter.

Arcata Police were called to the Parkway Apartments in the 400 block of Union Street on Saturday, Aug. 27 at 11:36 a.m. on a report of an unresponsive infant.

Officers performed CPR on the baby. She was rushed to Mad River Community Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

APD Chief Tom Chapman said no injuries to the child were initially apparent. However, a post-mortem X-ray revealed trauma to the infant’s head.

Ewa Misztal, 28, of Poland, was later arrested on suspicion of felony child abuse, causing great bodily injury or death. She is lodged in Humboldt County Jail on $1 million bail.

Misztal’s Facebook page lists her as a native of Krakow, Poland. Other residences listed include Dzialoszyce, Poland; Hyampom, Calif.; Playa del Carmen, Mexico; Opio, Alpes-Maritimes, France; Peymeinade, France; and Siam Reap, Cambodia.

The page includes a photo of Misztal with a baby, tagged as having been taken in August in Arcata.
