Week 37. Hard to believe it’s been over nine months of pandemic protocol. One measure for me is how many litters of puppies we have taken in and placed. Eight litters totaling 56 puppies have gone through Redwood Pals Rescue since the beginning of March! These puppies were just a small part of the great…
Dogtown: Parker, plus Daphne and her pups
Week 30. Humboldt County has moved to the less restrictive yellow tier of COVID protocol. The shelter has decided to open its doors for the public to come and pay licensing or redeem their impounded pets. Meet and greets for the adoptable cats and dogs will continue to be by appointment only, as that limits…
Dogtown: Every doggie has a story – Chica and Casper need a new co-author
Week 21. It’s been five months now since the Shelter In Place directive was issued. Lots of dogs and cats have been adopted and are providing good company to their new families during this strange socially distanced time. We are working out new routines at the shelter with staff and volunteers and getting settled into…
Dogtown: Quirky Benji for all your small dog needs
Week 20 of shelter in place: more activity in and around the shelter, including some new dogs up for adoption. There has been a lot of interest in small dogs lately, due to an apparent shortage of same. If you are one of those waiting on a small dog, I recommend keeping an eye on…
Dogtown: Stevie and Teddy are looking for foster homes
Stevie is a cheerful little guy and has already won over the returning volunteers! He is friendly with both humans and other dogs. He is playful and good on the leash, but currently is not a good candidate for long walks as his leg starts to bother him.
Dogtown: Marty and Smokey are gentlemen of the first order
The dogs are happy for more walks and new faces, though we have learned that masks with dog faces on them are confusing to our canine friends! Fortunately we can let them see our real faces out on our walks away from others.
Dogtown: Shelter in place with a fuzzy friend
Week 14 of shelter in place: the Humboldt County Animal Shelter is down to five adoptable dogs, though there are a couple in the wings that may be available by the time this paper hits the newsstands. The kittens hinted at last week have arrived; most of them are still a little young for adoption…
Dogtown: Animal shelter nearly empty
Week seven of shelter in place: the shelter has only three adoptable dogs and five dogs in hold on site! Six other adoptable dogs are out with foster families (but still available). For comparison, the shelter was averaging around 25 adoptable dogs and a like number of dogs on hold around the start of the…
Dogtown: Influx of dogs at the shelter
The start of 2020 brought a lot of dogs into the shelter. Hard to tell whether that was a result of scary fireworks, owners out of town, wind opening gates or what, but we are hoping that they will still be claimed by their owners. For now, the shelter population is higher than we’d like.…
Dogtown: Sweet Tater never fails to entertain
I’m writing this week from the middle of a fascinating workshop presented by a group called the Shelter Playgroup Alliance. They have come here to share their experience with various forms of enrichment for shelter dogs, including how to safely create playgroups for the dogs so that they get to have social time with their…
