Tragedy at Big Lagoon

Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office BIG LAGOON – A 3-year-old toddler died after drowning Monday, Dec. 8 at Big Lagoon. At about 3:05 p.m. the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call of a missing toddler at the Big Lagoon County Park north of Trinidad. Deputies were immediately dispatched including Sheriff’s Search and Rescue personnel.

“This unfortunate and tragic event is a reminder of the ruthlessness and unrelenting power of the ocean here along the northern California coast,” said Lt. Bernie Garrigan, the Group Humboldt Bay public affairs officer. “With the holiday season upon us and more people out for walks along the beach, it is critically important to maintain situational awareness and stay away from the surf which can quickly build and catch people off guard.”
