HUMBOLDT –The county’s District Attorney has confirmed that the California Department of Justice is investigating the embezzlement of a significant amount of money from the local court system.

Rumors about the probe have been circulating and District Attorney Paul Gallegos said that the Department of Justice (DOJ) is indeed doing an investigation.

He added that his office has received some reports on the matter and there is “some additional investigation going on.”

There is suspicion that there’s been theft of restitution fees paid to the court system in cash, the DA said.

“We can prove that a large sum of money was stolen,” he added.

Gallegos said the court system requested the probe. He said he couldn’t comment further because the investigation is ongoing.

Calls to the DOJ’s press office weren’t answered by press time.

I would like to see an investigation into Children Welfare Services, that’s where the real crimes are taking place. Victims in Humboldt are treated like Arcata’s homeless population. Has anyone tried reporting anything to the new Attorney General? If so, was it as pointless as before?
