Noel Steele started his trade as a barber in 1958 and opened the first barber shop in McKinleyville, before the totem pole existed. Noel left the area and had numerous barber shops in the Sacramento valley area and earned the distinction of master barber. Noel moved back to Humboldt and opened Noel’s Barber Shop in 1996. Those who had the pleasure of getting their ears lowered at Noel’s can appreciate his love for all his carved redwood furnishings the Redwood Museum, as he would call it.
He loved his job and his customers. Even towards the end of his battle, he would say, “I got to get better, son, my customers need me.” I think you all needed each other.
A celebration of life will be planned in the near future at Noel’s Barber Shop at 2007 Central Ave in McKinleyville to share stories and lies, so watch for the annoucement in this paper.
