MHS wrestlers win championship

McKinleyville High School Wrestling team won the HDN Championships held at Eureka High School on Saturday, Feb. 16.

This is the first time MHS has won the championship in 20 years and also the first time for head coach Virgil Moorehead and assistant coach Sam Razzo. MHS won the tournament with 201 points. Eureka was 2nd with 177 and Del Norte 3rd with 119.

MHS had 3 HDN champions.  Ramiro Melecio, Jack Norton and Jay Jay Price were all gold medalists. Price was also the winner of the Outstanding Upper Weight Wrestler and the Jim Silva award.  2nd place finishers for Mack were: Josh Casqueira, Jeremy Szanto, Jaime Osorio, Kennedy Poston and Issac Kibby.  Finishing 3rd were Abel Melecio, Tanner King and Misa Guzman.  These wrestlers all qualified for North Coast Sections which will be held at Newark High School Feb. 22-23.
