BAYSIDE – All things considered, the occupants of this vehicle and other motorists on the road got lucky today. Around 10 a.m. this morning, the lug nuts on the rear passenger side wheel of this Ford Explorer sheered off. The wheel came off, sending the SUV careening down into the wetland on the center divider of U.S. Highway 101 just north of the Bayside Cutoff.

The two occupants of the southbound vehicle were shaken but uninjured. A California Highway Patrol officer on scene said that the vehicle landed softly. He noted that there have been cases in which wheels fell off, slammed into other vehicles and killed people. But not this time.

Faulty installation of the lug nuts may be the culprit for the wheel failure. A tow truck was summoned to the crash site to remove the vehicle.
