ARCATA – When the San Francisco 49ers needed to fortify their rushing attack entering the fourth and final preseason game on Thursday night they didn't need to look far. Former Humboldt State running back and all-time rushing leader Ja'Quan Gardner signed a three-year contract with the 49ers Tuesday, Aug. 28.
The Ceres, Calif., native will wear the red and gold Thursday versus the San Diego Chargers. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Gardner joins teammate Alex Cappa who was drafted by Tampa Bay as former Lumberjacks on NFL rosters. Cappa was drafted by the Buccaneers in the third round of the NFL Draft.
During his time on the North Coast, Gardner re-wrote the Humboldt State football record book. He is the program's all-time leader in career rushing yards, touchdowns scored and points. Gardner appeared in 42 career games and registered 880 carries for 5,495 yards and 72 rushing touchdowns. As a senior, he finished with 206 carries for 1,322 yards and 21 touchdowns while adding 20 receptions for 212 yards and two touchdowns.
Gardner will wear No. 38 with the 49ers.
