HUMBOLDT – Massive waves are expected to pound the coast Thursday evening through Friday morning, spurring the National Weather Service to issue a high surf advisory. (Click here for this morning's weather report.)
High winds are expected tomorrow and will whip up the sea into a giant froth, with breaking waves 18 to 22 feet tall along the coast.
This poses the threat of sneaker waves, which can reach further up the beach than people expect. The best way to avoid these waves is to not going to the beach during the advisory, which is from 6 p.m. Thursday to 8 a.m. Friday.
The waves also pose a threat to people visiting the jetties or other rock outcroppings.
