Get on board the Love Train – A musical benefit for Tim Gray

Arcata Playhouse

The Arcata Playhouse will present a Get on Board the Love Train benefit for local musician, composer and recording engineer Tim Gray on Friday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m.

The benefit will raise money for Gray’s medical expenses. Several years ago Gray was diagnosed with a rare degenerative brain disorder for which there is no cure.  His resulting symptoms have restricted his ability to pursue his widely recognized talents as a musician and sound engineer/designer.

Gray is well-known in Humboldt as a longtime songwriter, drummer, recording engineer, soul singer. He served as the musical director at Dell’Arte for the past 20 years.  He was a member of numerous popular bands including Lance Romance, The Bayou Swamis, Barking Dogma and the Joyce Hough Band. He has engineered the sound recordings of many local musicians including all the performers scheduled for the benefit. He has been a mentor and inspiration to many local musicians.

“He has given much to our community and now we want to give some back,” said Fred Neighbor, a guitarist and singer, who has been Gray’s musical colleague in The Joyce Hough Band and Home Cookin’.

The benefit features a lineup of musicians who have worked with Gray over the years. Lindsey Battle and Cory Goldman will bring their blend of folk, jazz, and bluegrass.  They weave together harmonies and tell stories with guitars, banjo and ukulele. Old Dog, composed of Marty Dodd, Gary Davidson, Tom Pexton, and Dave Deason, have been creating original songs for more than 20 years and present a combination of skilled acoustic musicianship and song writing.  Jeff Landen is a well-known blues guitarist/singer who has performed with Gray in many bands over the years. Landen has written a song for the night. Home Cookin’, whose members are Gray, Neighbor, Joyce Hough, Gary Davidson, and Mike Labolle, will close the night with dance music.

Tickets are $20.  Available at Wildberries Marketplace, as well as online at brownpapertickets.com  Doors open at 7 p.m. and music begins at 7:30 p.m. For additional information or reservations call (707) 822-1575 or visit arcataplayhouse.org. The Arcata Playhouse is located at 1251 9th Street in Arcata.
