PORTLAND, Ore. – For the eighth time in his Humboldt State career, junior running back Ja’Quan Gardner earned Great Northwest Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors. Gardner shared the weekly award with Central Washington receiver Jesse Zalk.
The Ceres, Calif., native exploded for 313 rushing yards, a single-game program record, and 375 yards of total offense, a GNAC single-game record, in Saturday's home win over Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference member Western State Colorado.
Gardner churned out 100 rushing yards and a touchdown on 12 carries in the first quarter, and he finished the first half with 164 rushing yards. He carried the ball nine times for 103 yards, including a 41-yard touchdown run, in the third quarter. Gardner concluded his record-breaking performance with nine carries for 46 yards in the fourth quarter. He also had two kickoff returns for 58 yards and two catches for four yards.
Gardner is one GNAC Player of the Week award shy of matching Terrell Watson’s conference record nine selections. The junior surpassed former HSU running Lyndon Rowells’ total of seven career awards.
The Lumberjacks travel to face Central Washington on Saturday, Nov. 12 in Ellensburg, Wash. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
