HUMBOLDT – The jury has begun deliberating the second degree murder case of Juan Joseph Ferrer, 36, of Arcata, in Humboldt County Superior Court. Deliberations are scheduled to resume at 8:30 a.m. Friday.

State and defense attorneys completed their final arguments today, May 14 and the case was given to the jury late morning.facebookbadgeforweb

The prosecution emphasized "you don't bring a knife to a fist fight." The use of deadly force was not justified in response to the alleged name calling by the victim, Douglas Anderson-Jordet, 50, also of Arcata, according to the state.

The defense countered that Ferrer was not on his way to fight but on his way home in the early morning hours of Nov. 25, 2013 at 11th and H streets in Arcata. It was Anderson-Jordet "who was on his way to a fight" after drinking heavily.
