ELECTION 2014: Victory For Sundberg, Bass & Fleming

HUMBOLDT – It was a good day for incumbents.

On Election Day, June 3, incumbent candidates for the Fourth and Fifth District seats on the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors won clear victories over their challengers.

In the race for the sprawling Fifth District, incumbent Ryan Sundberg won with a commanding lead of 2,782 votes, or 61.09 percent. Challenger Sharon Latour was more than 1,000 votes behind, receiving 1,761 votes, or 38.67 percent.

Results were closer for the Fourth District seat, with incumbent Virginia Bass winning with 2,358 votes, or 53.31 percent, over challenger Chris Kerrigan, who received 2,055 votes, or 46.46 percent.

With four candidates running for District Attorney, there was a chance for a November runoff election. But Maggie Fleming knocked it out of the park, winning decisively with 13,308 votes, or 60.96 percent. She was trailed by Elan Firpo, with 5,633 votes, or 25.80 percent. Allan Dollison received 1,764 votes, or 8.08 percent. Arnie Klein received 1,085 votes, or 4.97 percent.

Fleming will replace DA Paul Gallegos at the end of the year. Gallegos decided not to seek reelection.

These election results are preliminary, end-of-the-night totals and may change.
