ARCATA RESIDENT ARRESTED FOR DUI AFTER COLLIDING WITH A RESIDENCE
On Tuesday, Feb. 4 at about 5:11 p.m., APD officers were dispatched to the 1400 block of Chester Avenue for a solo vehicle collision into a residence.
According to witnesses at the scene, the Mustang had rapidly accelerated after leaving the intersection of Chester Avenue and Beverly Drive. One neighbor said the vehicle was power shifting through the gears when sounds of tires squealing were heard – and shortly after, sirens.
Police administered a sobriety test at the scene, with which the suspect willingly complied. At one point, he was unable to walk a straight line on the sidewalk, and threw out his hands in a gesture of resignation.
A man holding a little girl at the scene said Collins's Mustang was often seen speeding up and down the wide Sunny Brae avenue. Noting the skid marks across the sidewalk, the man wondered, "What if I had been walking along here with my daughter?"
Another man said fed-up neighbors had located Collins' vehicle after repeatedly observing it speeding on the street, recorded the license plate number and reported to to Arcata Police. APD, they said, sent a letter to the vehicle's registered owner forwarding their complaint.
The neighbor said Collins' Mustang was reported two times, but the speeding continued.
