I have decided to dedicate this first column to Andy’s Boot Camp (just typing about it elevates my heart rate and makes me sweat). Actually, Andy is a good friend of mine that just so happens to be a personal trainer at HealthSPORT (I think he gets major enjoyment out of kicking my ass on a regular basis).
Boot Camp Hell
The clock strikes 6:30 p.m. and I take my respective place at the back of the room waiting for Andy’s Boot Camp to begin -- Thoughts of why why why am I getting sucked in to this hell race through my head. My only goal at this point is to be able to get my fat ass off the floor when class is over and just drive home!
We all grab a mat, the high energy rock music begins to blare and the stretching and real pain begins! OMG what kind of hell have I gotten myself into...?
Andy begins the class by yelling what I consider to be obscenities (not swear words, but words that are frightful to those of us who are out of shape) words like “light feet,” “work through your obstacles” and “hold that position longer...” my thoughts are now muddled because there’s soooo much sweat in my ears that all I can hear at this point is blah blah blah...
As I gaze around the room, I quickly notice that what I consider to be the super-fit folks are covered in sweat just like me. All of us are moaning in one way or another and together we enter Stage 1 of the major endorphin buzz – geez, who needs a 215 card when you can get high just by attending Andy’s Boot Camp?
I knew I didn’t have a chance in hell of being able to keep up with everyone or anyone in the class but, my heart was in it and I have a strong work ethic. Andy expects and encourages a 100 percent effort level from everyone, no matter what their individual fitness level. We work at our own pace and are given modifications as/when needed.
I look at the clock and couldn’t believe how quickly time has passed, and class is almost over. Except for my stress of trying to figure out how I’m gonna actually peel myself off the floor, I felt really good.
Thoughts surge through my mind... crap, will Andy mistake me for pile of wet gym towels and just leave me there?” I quickly remember my original goal of getting off the floor and driving home. I give my body one last fighting push and up I go (obstacle accomplished!)
I am well aware of the fact that my push ups and crunches need major improvement but ya gotta start somewhere and somewhere is exactly where I am now.
I’m proud to say, by the way, that I’ve been back to Andy’s Boot Camp several times now and can actually do a few perfect push-ups! What I didn’t realize when I started this was that I friggin’ love the endorphins in overdrive.
For those of you who are wondering, I am not crazy. I am a contestant in the HealthSPORT/Cher Ae Heights VIP Fit Club challenge. Fit Club is a 12-week program designed through HealthSPORT that provides small group personal training, nutritional guidance and most importantly... ACCOUNTABILITY.
Together our Fit-Club has lost over 237 lbs. (that’s the equivalent of a grown man!) and I love competition.
Here’s my challenge to you: join me at Boot Camp this week... or if you’re not up to that yet, just walk up the G Street hill.
In either case make sure you stop and say hi. I promise you that a little fresh air and movement will only make you feel better-physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually!
