HUMBOLDT – Juan Joseph Ferrer, 35, is being charged with second-degree murder with a knife in connection with the stabbing death of Douglas Anderson-Jordet on Monday, Nov. 25.
Sophie Buttercup Rocheleau, 24, Nicholas Benjamin Stoiber, 28, are being charged with assault with force likely to cause bodily injury.
All three will be arraigned this afternoon.
On forwarding charges to the DA’s Office, Arcata Police Chief Tom Chapman had said that all three suspects could, in principle, have been charged with homicide under the state’s felony murder rule.
“While only one of the three did the stabbing, when all three act in concert, they’re equally culpable,” Chapman said.
Assistant District Attorney Kelly Neel said the assault charges against Rocheleau and Stoiber could be upgraded to homicide pending further investigation.
“There’s not enough evidence to suggest that they knew about the knife,” Neel said. “If they do, that could change.”
Chapman said APD has recovered a knife, but hasn’t verified that it is the weapon used in the stabbing. The knife has been sent to the Department of Justice for forensic testing.
Contrary to published reports, Rocheleau and Stoiber didn’t turn themselves in. “That’s a bit of a stretch," Chapman said.
The two had been contacted at their residences, and consented to return with officers to the APD station for interviews. What they told detectives led to their arrest, according to Chapman.
“A decision was made that there was sufficient evidence to make an arrest,” he said.
Ferrer was then located at his residence and arrested.
As to what caused the fatal encounter, Chapman characterized it as “ridiculous stuff.”
“It appears that words were exchanged and a fight ensued,” he said. “There was a fistfight, then a knife was used.”
Though charges have been filed, APD is continuing to investigate the incident. Statements are being corroborated and search warrants have been served, though Chapman wouldn’t say where, and evidence collected at those locations is being analyzed.
“We’re trying to tie up loose ends and make sure all the evidence is wrapped up,” he said.
