Nearly two years of unpaid TOT has built up to $108,000. What’s more, Days Inn is delinquent in over $22.776.62 in unpaid water bills. Considering Arcata’s annual Transient Occupancy Taxes take is some $900,000, the outstanding $130,000 is a major chunk of City revenue. Collection attempts through the firm’s Arcata management have been somewhat fruitless – until Finance received a partial bill payment last year. That check bounced.
The weekend of March 13 and 14, power will go out in large portions of Arcata and environs for up to 22 hours, forcing some 6,392 customers to give up today’s popular electrified obsessions such as Friendster and Reba and somehow find comparably interesting off-line amusements.
“The most dangerous threat to democracy in America is the mistaken belief we have one,” Cobb said. “When corporations can legally claim the rights of a person, democracy is illegal.”
Bruner said the theatrical presentation provided a means of explicating and understanding a tragic era in human history. “If you don’t talk about it, it’s bound to happen again,” he said.
Gallegos believes that “first and foremost,” a DA’s job is to be a trial attorney. “You have to lead by example and be willing to try those tough cases, those big cases for the community,” he said. “The people of this community deserve to see me in court – I’m not an administrator, they didn’t elect me to be an administrator, they elected me to make sure this office runs and it runs well.”
The term “Nazi” is not unknown to Arcata politics. Public comment on subjects ranging from cannabis to homelessness, water fluoridation, even solid waste policy and simple regs against blocking sidewalks have been marked by accusations that actual fascists, sometimes of a Hitlerian flavor, somehow control Humboldt’s most liberal city.
On Wednesday morning, three officers and two Buddy’s workers found a vacant white whale where it had been resting on Seventh Street for months. It has been tagged with months of violation stickers. But the whale did not go easy. A busted hydraulic system, the mechanics spent hours repairing it in order to get it down the street. And then… she was cut loose, prompting cheers from the neighboring businesses.
