Big ship to take wood chips to China

Green Diamond

HUMBOLDT BAY – The cargo ship Crimson Polaris landed on Friday at the Green Diamond wood chip dock and is currently taking on a cargo of redwood and Douglas-fir wood chips that will be delivered to a pulp mill in China.

This is the second cargo of chips from Humboldt Bay for the vessel. The ship will sail to China on Wednesday, December 10 with a cargo of 21,000 bone dry metric tonnes. The wood chips are a by-product of the lumber manufacturing process and are produced at local sawmills.

There have been very limited local markets for chips since the closure of the two pulp mills. The Crimson Polaris is one of the largest ships to visit Humboldt Bay with six cargo holds, a beam of 105 feet and length of 653 feet.
