Arreaga previously waived his right to a preliminary hearing, clearing the way for proceeding to trial. He has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder and six special allegations pertaining to the use of a firearm, a handgun, in the killings of Harley Wayne Hammers, Jr., and Angel Robin Tully, both 37, of Eureka.

Both murders were committed “with malice of forethought,” court documents allege. The slayings were reported shortly after 5 p.m. last Sept. 3.

Arreaga faces a maximum sentence of up to 80 years to life.

Tully was found dead of a gunshot wound at 4406 Fieldbrook Road. Sheriff’s deputies found Hammers suffering from a similar wound in a red Mazda pickup truck across the street, at 4415 Fieldbrook Road. He died shortly after being transported to Mad River Community Hospital.
